NOOSA NATIONAL PARK DOCUMENTARY DVD

Overview:

Entitled "it's Only Natural", this one hour DVD about the Headland Section of Noosa National Park was produced over 3 years by retired  professional production engineer and art dealer, Noosa's Thomas  (Tom) T. DRAPER, as a tribute to the values of those who identify Noosa as a place distinct from the rest.

Thousands of Australians and overseas visitors gravitate to Noosa unaware perhaps, that resident "powers that be" have fought for generations to retain rare environmental qualities, critical design of infrastructure and diversity in housing, despite inevitable failures. Taken as a complete package, Noosa is an individual example of what can be done to create a kind of individuality not evident elsewhere in Australia. UNESCO has subsequently approved our submission of the entire area within the old Noosa Shire boundary as a biosphere reserve, viz., the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, one of about 50 in Australia and 400 internationally, mainly in Northern Europe.

Review Comments:

  • A one-time director of the leading Brisbane production house Q-Vision, commented that the documentary depicted outstanding action photography.
  • Regional Mayor Bob Abbott commented that he loved the video because it was the kind of thing he could play over and over again while he worked. That was a while back when he was Noosa Mayor. Bob incidently is a musician as well as administrator. Perhaps his love of the music created by local composer arranger and musician Barry Charles, from his CD "Beyond Boundaries", influenced his assessment of the quality of the one hour production. Barry incidently kindly contributed several tracks from his CD.

  • "The Noosa Journal", local weekly newspaper, kindly did a thorough review of the environmental video. The following is a reprint:
Nature-lovers are in for a treat with the recent release of a one-hour documentary shot exclusively in the Noosa Heads section of the Noosa National Park.

So, armed with a digital camera and an "eye for art", Mr. Draper set about capturing the sights and sounds of the 454-hectare park in all seasons and time of day. Believing that nature sells itself, he employed ani
Thomas T. Draper shoots Noosa DVDmals as the principle actors and relied on images and sub-text to propel people along.

Mr. Draper captures a kaleidoscope of parklife, from the very small, such as bees and other insect life, to park icon, the koala. Flora also takes centre stage, including some 30 wildflowers which see the park blossom with colour in Spring.

The film has it all, from the scenic beauty of look-outs as at The Boiling Pot, Tea Tree Bay, Dolphin Point, Hell's Gates, Lion Rock and Devil's Kitchen, to  rainforest, open forest, shrublands and grasslands.

The documentary features a tribute to Dr. Arthur Harold, who championed the sanctioning of the National Park, and a 5-minute intermission displaying artworks from Mr. Draper's  gallery, Young Masters Gallery, located in Sunshine Beach.

Tributes:

Tom Draper personally funded the purchase of Apple Power Mac and Apple Final Cut Pro software for the editing of this documentary.  At the time Final Cut Pro was second only to AVID internationally, in leading edge desktop video editing. Anyone with editing experience of the last 10 years will recognize that Tom had to develop an extremely high level of professionalism  to achieve  the results portrayed, especially when some of the initial footage he shot did not live up to expectations, requiring intensive re-work as it could not be re-captured. The overall good outcome can be however directly attributed to intensive one on one desktop training provided by video professionals, Videopro Brisbane in the person of Dave Thompson.

Only broadcast quality 3-chip digital Panasonic digital camera and interchangeable objectives were employed.
Most material was shot on either pan head tripods, special ground level or other rigid supports.

$40,000 equipment and servicing costs associated with this project have been funded by Tom Draper alone, as applications for grants were unsuccessful.
