Environmental Credentials:
As a very active photographer, in 1954 Tom Draper joined the Sydney University Speleological Society on the advice of Society President and acquaintance, the now well-known Professor Brian J, O'Brien, PhD., then studying his thesis in physics at Sydney University. A couple of years later Tom transferred his allegiances to the Sydney Speleological Society, where he soon became a trip leader. He led many expeditions underground. In all, Tom attended some seventy-five short trips and a few extended expeditions underground. Tom was also keenly involved in cave surveying and mapping which he in his characteristic way, started on his own initiative.
He was nominated as a quartermaster and photographer on a major expedition 1956-57 to the Nullabor Caves under the auspices of the Australian Speleological Federation, Doctor Elery Hamilton-Smith and the South Australian Museum. Excavations revealed a 15,000 year old, aboriginal, chert implement factory.
In May 1960 Tom was made Honorary Fire Patrol Officer and Honorary Ranger for the State of New South Wales. He ceasing activities in caving by 1963. Two years later Tom found himself in the Alps of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy teaching skiing, something he carried on for fourteen years partially full-time and partially part-time. Naturally a keen awareness of the environment was part and parcel of his activities, particularly in regard to safety.
