Art appraisal and valuation document sample

  • What Appraisal Services we Provide:
We appraise on-site or will execute an online appraisal, photographs on location and valuation documents pertaining to paintings, sculpture, etchings, limited editions, drawings, original lithographs, serigraphs, woodblocks and linocuts, etc.
  • What Documentation you Receive:
Through the postal service you will receive an "original" printed standard format A4 document, (see sample), and a file copy. Should a photo of frame be provided, the framed item is shown: (see small inset). When appropriate, a zoomed-in high definition detail may also be illustrated. Finally the documents are signed and dated by the authorized fine art gallery art appraiser.
  • What You can expect to Pay:
For Assessments up to A$2,500: There is a flat minimum rate of A$50 for online appraising. (See details below).
Value over A$2,500: There is a sliding scale as follows:- 2% of the 1st A$2,500 plus 1% of the next A$32,500 (over A$2,500), plus 0.5% of the rest over A$35,000.
Travel Cost: A$80/hr plus A$1.20/km by motor vehicle.

Valuations in Excess of A$2,500
:

  1. It is prudent to view items physically, however due to the high cost of travel, trips are confined to the Sunshine Coast. Prior to making the journey, the round trip shall be paid for in advance, calculated and in accordance with the travel costs quoted above.
  2. The second part of the charges, i.e., for the actual valuation document itself, is paid prior to it's dispatch.
  3. If the item to be valued is a flat artwork, prior to making arrangements for an assessment, we recommend you check the item with a strong magnifying glass. If the characteristic "dot matrix" of a photo offset lithographic print is evident, (perhaps even under the paint), then the issue needs to be discussed on the phone initially. It could save you the cost of a visit by the assessor.
  4. Valuations can of course be made for works over $2,500 by an online appraiser in the same way as it is done for items under $2,500. The valuation document will then however be assigned the caveat, that no physical assessment was executed.
  5. Physical appraisals are not made at the gallery.

We need you to su
pply primarily the following:

You should provide by E-mail two or three good photos of the artwork, including a zoomed-in close-up of the surface of the artwork so we can confirm that it is what it is assumed to be. A close-up should encompass the artists signature.

In addition to the forgoing, we need the following miscellaneous details:
  1. The picture dimensions (height x width) in centimetres.
  2. If framed, the frame dimensions (height x width) in centimetres and condition. If damaged, send a close-up photo. Is it the original frame?
  3. Artist's name in full.
  4. Full title of painting and it's location. Is it written on the backing? Is the name on the canvas? Is it on a plaque?
  5. Any apparent physical damage to the artwork. Describe as best you can, so we can estimate the repair cost. A close-up photo of the damage would simplify the appraisal.
  6. If the work is presumed to be a painting on canvas, one of the close-up photos should be taken in an area of the canvas where the painter has applied a minimum-of paint or no paint at all. This can help us to confirm  if the item is genuine or not. Check if the item is perhaps a digital Giclee reproduction on canvas.
  7. Medium employed. If you don't know exactly, we suggest it may be written on the original receipt. Otherwise we will work off the photos and artist history.
Photos:

An inexperienced photographer should simply take the artwork out in the driveway on a sunny day in open shade with neutral colour surroundings. Prop the artwork up against a wall or small step ladder, (so that you can move around to get the best light). In order to avoid scuffing the edge of the painting, sweep the concrete first and lay down a piece of neutral colour corrugated cardboard or similar. If the artwork is under glass, (in particular), tilt it so as to avoid reflection of sky or trees in particular, and reflection of the cardboard. As photographer we suggest you wear something beige. (As an approximation, set the focal length on the lens barrel to 45 mm. Please don't use an on-camera flash device).

Re-touching:

We have software skills which may allow us to rectify photographic errors you may not be able to avoid.

Starting an Investment Art Portfolio
:

It is suggested that you may start an art collection of real value by purchasing initially, limited edition hand-signed original works of art on paper by well known artists.

(We have much experience in, and understanding of, this fine art category. This stems from satisfying a big Brisbane CBD market with Australian and imported British and American hand-signed original etchings, mezzotints, serigraphs and lithographs throughout the 1980's. In addition, we in fact, pioneered complex modern conservation framing for the optimum presentation of such works, in Brisbane, 15 years before it came to be accepted as mainstream in Queensland. We designed and ordered hundreds of complex frame designs. Abel Framing did the manufacture and assembly. Abel Framing still does framing for us and handles all our packing and delivery for artists commissions interstate and world-wide.)

Original hand-signed fine art prints may appreciate in value
in much the same way as do oil paintings if looked after properly.

An example of an artwork one should consider for appraisal and our reasons
:

Walter Magilton oil painting,YMG Code 109It is suggested that masterpieces such as this fine example by Australian (Victorian) painter, Walter Magilton, should be insured.

It should be manifestly clear as to why this artist has won hundreds of Art Awards during his long grand career.

Walter has been represented by the Young Masters Gallery exclusively in Queensland since 1983. To view about 15 examples of his oils on stretch canvas, or watercolours click HERE, then "Jb-Mas" button . He has exhibited widely, including, in the UK.

This dynamic painting is a perfect example of how to be larger than life, bold and beautiful, yet not "chocolate-boxy". Simply class! Investment potential likely.

Naturally, such magnificent work is rare and very collectible. If our records serve us correctly, this 120 x 90 cm item was sold in 1984 for A$1,550. To-day, a similar piece attracts a much higher figure. (YMG Code 109).

For the owner of such a painting, the securing of a painting appraisal and valuation document from the Young Masters Gallery would be a prudent decision.
